Natalie Schopen
Natalie Schopen is a Director, Risk Advisory Services at BDO LLP
I started my career in 1993 as a trainee accountant at a national construction company, where I gained valuable experience in various finance functions, such as payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and month-end accounting and reporting. While pursuing my AAT and ACCA qualifications, I worked with a range of organisations across industries, which broadened my accountancy experience and deepened my understanding of organisational challenges. My curiosity about how organisations operate beyond finance, coupled with my desire for more variety, led me to explore new opportunities in internal audit. In 2005, I transitioned to internal audit within local government before joining BDO LLP in 2007 as a senior internal auditor. Since then, I’ve progressed to Director, combining my internal audit expertise with my passion for helping organisations manage risks effectively.
What I love most about internal audit is its variety. No two days are ever the same. Working across diverse sectors such as manufacturing, real estate, and construction keeps the role dynamic and engaging. Every engagement is unique, offering opportunities to learn about new industries, collaborate with stakeholders, and tackle evolving challenges. I particularly enjoy helping organisations manage risks and providing practical, tailored recommendations that create real value.
Internal audit also allows me to expand my own knowledge and experience by addressing evolving risks. For instance, recognising that health and safety was consistently reported as a top strategic risk, I undertook various H&S qualifications and became a certified member of IOSH. These qualifications have enabled me to deliver high-quality health and safety audits and advisory services, ensuring my clients receive the most relevant insights as risks evolve.
My role spans multiple industries, each with its own challenges. Internal auditors face various complexities, especially in navigating a changing risk landscape. We must adapt to new regulatory changes, technological advancements, and industry-specific risks. These challenges require agility and resilience. While complex, they also offer opportunities to innovate and grow.
In my work, I’ve encountered challenges like balancing regulatory compliance with operational demands and helping clients see internal audit as a strategic partner rather than just a compliance function. Addressing these challenges has allowed me to deepen my expertise and provide tailored, value-added insights. By customising my approach to meet the needs of each client, I ensure organisations receive assurance that truly supports their objectives.
With nearly two decades of experience, I remain passionate about the critical role internal audit plays in helping organisations succeed. Whether conducting audits across diverse industries, supporting health and safety initiatives, or mentoring the next generation of auditors, I’m committed to delivering high-quality work that drives meaningful improvements. As part of the ACCA Internal Audit Sector panel, I’m excited to share insights, foster collaboration, and contribute to the growth and innovation of the internal audit profession.
