Accountancy bodies and expert communities across Africa unite to advance sustainable business

ACCA in collaboration with the Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA) Sustainability Centre of Excellence leads the formation of the Sustainability Working Group Africa (SWGA) to advance sustainability reporting and business practices

Established in response to the growing importance of sustainability reporting, SWGA aims to shape the role of professional accountants and experts in driving high standards, fostering sustainable business practices, and enabling cross-border collaboration.

SWGA leverages stakeholder observers to align institutions, ensuring the harmonisation of sustainability initiatives at the regional level. This approach fosters collaboration across sectors and jurisdictions and drives collective impact. SWGA is led by ACCA in collaboration with the PAFA Sustainability Centre of Excellence.

Jamil Ampomah, ACCA’s director – Africa, said: "Accountants play a vital role in tackling climate change and driving sustainability. Collaboration among like-minded professionals is essential, and SWGA demonstrates how working together can elevate the profession for the benefit of Africa’s economies."

Alta Prinsloo, PAFA CEO, said: “Accountants are becoming increasingly influential as agents and architects of change, bringing the expertise, insight, and technical skills that businesses need to adopt sustainable practices and drive sustainability reporting. We are proud to be at the forefront of this progress in Africa."

Jane Ohadike, Head of Public Affairs for ACCA in Africa, said: "A sustainable future is threatened by misinformation, lack of information, and greenwashing. ACCA has long championed consistent global sustainability reporting standards, and we’re excited to drive this progress in Africa through this partnership.”

The SWGA will include an Advisory Panel of experts comprising ACCA members and other specialists, to assess jurisdiction-specific case study insights and provide recommendations to the Forum for Advancing Sustainability and Integrated Reporting in Africa, currently being established by PAFA.

By strengthening cross-jurisdictional alignment, the Advisory Panel creates opportunities for development partners, regulators, and public institutions to leverage insights and partnerships to shape sustainable finance strategies, enhance regulatory capacity, and integrate sustainability into financial and policy frameworks across Africa.
