About the Event

On 9 June 2022, the Government of the HKSAR announced the abolition of the use of accrued benefits derived from employers’ mandatory contributions under the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) System contributions in offsetting the Long Service Payment (LSP) and severance payment effective from 1 May 2025.

On 22 February 2023, the HKICPA published Financial Reporting Alert 44 to highlight the potential accounting impact. Subsequently, also issued an education guidance on 4 July 2023, outlining the accounting implications of the abolition of the MPF-LSP offsetting mechanism in Hong Kong and proposing two approaches to account for the related costs.
